7 Handy Organization Tips To Keep Your New Home Tidy

Moving to a new home can be exciting, but the stress of organizing your new place can be real as well. Fortunately, it’s also a great time to address the problem head-on and stay organized.

As tempting as it would be to quickly unpack and shove things in drawers and closets, taking time to organize things while you unpack can save you a lot of headaches in the long run.

Here are great organization tips on how you can keep your new home tidy:

    1. Plan beforehand

One of the most common mistakes many people make when organizing their new home is rushing it, doing it in just a day or the weekend. However, it’s crucial to plan by adding a couple of extra days to unpack and organize your things. We suggest that you plan beforehand so that you’ll have enough time to prepare.

If you have small kids, plan some moving activities to keep them preoccupied. Also, ensure that there’s an extra hand to help you, like a babysitter or a grandparent. You can organize your things with a much clearer mind knowing that the kids stay out of the way.

    2. Declutter as you unpack

While you unpack, make sure you also have a pile that you’ll donate, or throw out. If you’re rushing, you might not have the time to declutter anymore. However, you certainly should before you start putting things away.

Also, if you’re unpacking, make sure that you check a couple of things that you’re not using and get rid of them. If you haven’t used it in your old place, then it’s also likely that you won’t be using it in your new house.

    3. Unpack room by room

It’s also important that you categorize your packing room by room. Many moving experts agree that you should start with the kitchen first. After you’re done with the kitchen, you’ll be able to save a lot of money while not eating out or ordering your food online. The kitchen is the foundational building block of your home. Thus, it makes sense that you unpack here first.

At Maid Sailors, we always tell clients to devise a quick plan of the room they want to tackle first. Make sure to access all the boxes in the area. It also helps to have a staging area for unpacking, such as a garage or storage unit.

After you’re done with the kitchen, you might want to tackle the bedrooms, living room, and bathroom next. You can save guest rooms and offices until it’s necessary.

    4. Unpacks first, then decorate

While you unpack, you’ll likely come across some décor items and the rest of your stuff. Set these aside until you’ve unpacked a room and started decorating it.

This lets you check what else you need to decorate. It also saves you from placing any unnecessary holes in walls.

It’s also worth noting that every home is different. Thus, you might find more or less than you did previously. Thus, you might have to prioritize things you’ll be hanging for display.

    5. Create a storage family room or den

You can make a family-friendly family room from ottomans that can also be used as storage spaces for baskets, containers, and shelves.

You can use containers under the sofa for games and movies to prevent clutter. You can also use smaller baskets for art supplies and other items.

    6. Streamline your laundry room

Laundry rooms often have smaller spaces. So rather than using a single hamper, you can opt for a three-piece hamper to separate lights from darks and towels.

Place your detergent, stain removers, and other laundry supplies close to the washer as much as possible. You can also use the inside of cabinet doors for additional storage.

Similarly, you can also place hooks and other hardware to hang brooms, mops, and your ironing board. Consider wire shelving as well.

    7. It’s alright to let go

You’ve probably purged before moving. However, there might be a couple of boxes filled with random things that haven’t found a home yet in your new place. You might also notice that some furniture works great in your new place but just doesn’t fit the old one.

So, don’t feel so bad letting some things go, as there’s a high chance you’ll be taking several trips to the donation center the first couple of weeks after your move.

If there’s something that just doesn’t fit your space, make sure that you look for something else that does.

    Over to You

So there you have it. Those are seven handy tips on how you can organize your new home, and make it tidy after your move. If you’ve followed the tips discussed in this article, the moving process, and your place will likely be well organized. Good luck!
